7 signs a tree needs to be removed in Rochester

Not every tired-looking tree has to come down, but a few warning signs mean it's time to get it looked at before it fails, on your roof, your car, or a neighbor's. Here are the signs we watch for on free assessments across Rochester, MN.

1. Large dead branches or a dead crown

A few dead twigs are normal. Big dead limbs, or a whole section of the canopy that never leafed out, mean decline. Dead wood drops without warning, and a mostly-dead crown usually can't recover.

2. The trunk is leaning (especially suddenly)

A tree that has always grown at a slight angle can be fine. A trunk that has started leaning, with soil heaving or cracking on one side of the base, may have failing roots and can go over in the next storm.

3. Cracks, splits, or included bark

Deep vertical cracks in the trunk, or a tight V-shaped fork with bark pinched inside it, are weak points. Under wind or the weight of ice and wet snow, that's where a tree tears apart.

4. Mushrooms or fungus at the base

Conks and mushrooms growing on the trunk or root flare are a sign of internal decay. The wood may look fine outside while it's hollowing out within, which is common in older Rochester shade trees.

5. Hollow or soft wood

A hollow trunk isn't always fatal, but if a large share of the wood is gone or soft and crumbly, the tree has lost the strength it needs to stand up to a storm.

6. Roots lifting, heaving, or cut

Roots buckling a sidewalk, or a root plate lifting on the far side of a lean, signal instability. Roots recently severed by trenching or construction also weaken a tree's anchor.

7. It's too close to the house or power lines

Sometimes the tree is healthy but simply in the wrong place, growing into the roof, foundation, or utility lines. Removal (or careful pruning) protects your home and keeps everyone safe.

When pruning is enough

Plenty of trees just need structural pruning to remove dead or weak limbs and restore balance. A good tree service will tell you honestly when a tree can be saved instead of removed. Rochester Tree Removal offers free, no-pressure assessments in Rochester, so you get a straight answer either way.
